Description

Empire of the Petal Throne (1975 1st TSR edition), boxed roleplaying game, by Professor M.A.R. Barker

“Tekumel, the world of fantasy and adventure. The setting for this fantasy campaign game is an alien planet, Tekumel, where a cosmic cataclysm stranded human and extra-territorial invaders eons past. A hostile world of poisonous flora and fauna, with intelligent and vengeful native races! Mankind and its allies must battle for survival with nothing save Medieval technology — but magic aids them . . . and there are certain supernatural powers which may intervene.

The game contains three large full-colour maps and 8 1/4″ x 11″ book with a brief history of Tekumel, rules, descriptions of various races and creatures involved, and more. Share in this exciting fantasy world by playing EMPIRE OF THE PETAL THRONE.”

Depending on how you define “published”, this was arguably the second RPG ever published, and the second published by TSR. Professor Barker self-published a “manuscript” edition of the game in 1974 with a tiny print run of possibly just twenty copies.  TSR the offered to publish the game commercially, and this is the first TSR edition, from 1975. TSR also did a second printing in 1977.

The rulebook is in POOR condition. The covers and the final couple of pages have detached from the plastic binding comb. (Yes, this was originally bound with one of those cheap binding machines.) Sellotape has been used to repair the binding at some point in its 46 year life, but that sellotape has largely perished. A previous owner has attached a sticker with his name and address on the inside front cover. There are a handful of small ink marks in the book. All pages appear to be present.

The introduction sheet (the text of which was printed on the back of the box in the second printing) is present and is in GOOD condition.

The box is in FAIR condition.

The three large full-colour maps are present and are all in GOOD condition. The previous owner has stored these maps rolled up in a poster tuber rather than folded in the game box, and we will supply them in the same tube.
