Dungeons & Dragons WOODGRAIN set, 3rd printing, by Gygax & Arneson

“Rules for Fantastic Medieval Wargames Campaigns Playable with Paper and Pencil and Miniature Figures.”

A very rare opportunity to own one of the very first printings of the very first role-playing game. This is a third printing, from April 1975. Either 2,000 or 3,300 copies of this printing were printed (sources vary), and all were hand-assembled by Gary Gygax and his friends and family. There is every chance that it was Gary Gygax himself who put these booklets and reference sheets into this woodgrain box.

TSR co-founder Don Kaye had died in January 1975, and the company moved from his kitchen to Gygax’s basement.

The fourth and later printings replaced the woodgrain box with a plain white box.

Inside the box are three booklets:

  • Volume 1 Men & Magic (VERY GOOD condition)
  • Volume 2 Monsters & Treasure (FAIR).
  • Volume 3 The Underworld & Wilderness Adventures (Very GOOD)

There are also the Reference Sheets (eight pages, VERY GOOD) and a single-page Correction Sheet (VERY GOOD).

Book Two was originally missing from this set. We have been able to source another 3rd printing Book Two to complete the set, but you should note (as stated above) that it is in worse condition than the other two books and that it has a different previous owner’s name inside.

The box itself is structurally sound but in a condition which I would describe as being on the bottom end of FAIR, towards POOR. It has been repaired with tape more than once in its life. Older tape has been removed in the past but has left a dry residue (see photographs). Our in-house conservation expert has made some very discreet repairs, but we have generally left the box and lid as original as possible. The titles of two supplements (Greyhawk and Gods, Demi-Gods & Heroes) have been written on the cover in biro (suggesting perhaps that at some point, a previous owner sold this copy together with the supplements?). These two supplements are not included.

Men & Magic has no interior marks, except for the letters “C-ERS” in the top right corner of the first page.

Monsters & Treasure has some minor pencil annotations on three different pages. The cover had separated, but has been repaired by our own in-house conservation expert. There is a small address label of a previous owner in the top-left corner of the inside front cover.

The Underworld & Wilderness Adventures has no interior marks, except for the letters “C-ERS” in the top right corner of the first page.
