Dungeons & Dragons Basic Rulebook (RARE 1st Games Workshop UK printing), softback roleplaying game
“The Original Fantasy Role-Playing Game For 3 Or More Players.”
This is the super-rare 1st UK printing of the Dungeons & Dragons ‘Holmes’ Basic Rulebook, published under licence in the UK by Games Workshop in December 1977 (pretty much at the same time as the first print of the TSR version of the Holmes Basic rules).
The cover artwork is by John Blanche. At the time, Blanche was a freelance illustrator, but he would go on to be Games Workshop’s Art Director for many years and the man ultimately responsible for the look and feel of Warhammer and Warhammer 40,000. Interior artwork is by Chris ‘Fangorn’ Baker – then still a teenager, but again an artist who would go on to bigger and better things, with plenty of book covers and concept art for major movies to his name. (Despite the youthful artist, the interior artwork is a little more adult in nature than the TSR edition.)
This copy came to us in pretty shoddy condition. Our in-house conservator has sympathetically restored it. Pages 1 and 2 are missing so that the first interior page is Gary Gygax’s foreword on page 3. I would guess that page 1 was originally the copyright page, and that page 2 was probably blank, but I’m not 100% sure. This edition is very rare and this is the only one we’ve ever had. Our conservator has reattached the cover to the interior pages. There are some stains on interior pages, notably on pages 3 and 40. There are fairly minor ink annotations on pages 11 and 20, and minor pencil annotations on page 41. Interior pages are generally in ‘GOOD’ condition under our grading system. The outer cover condition is closest to ‘FAIR’ under our grading system.
